About Lokoja Emirate Council

The Lokoja Emirate Council stands as one of Nigeria’s most historic traditional institutions, rooted at the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue. Established in 1870, the Council embodies the legacy of the Maigaris of Lokoja — a lineage of leadership, resilience, and service to the people. For more than a century, the throne of the Maigari has served as a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and guidance for the Lokoja community and beyond.

Our Heritage

From the enthronement of Maigari Musa Dauda (Jacob Meheux) in 1870 under the decree of Masaba, Emir of Nupe, the Lokoja Emirate has played a defining role in the political, cultural, and social development of Lokoja. Each successive Maigari has contributed to the progress of the people, championing education, commerce, agriculture, and the preservation of traditional values.

The Emirate is deeply connected to Islamic scholarship and cultural enlightenment, hosting scholars and leaders who shaped the identity of Lokoja as both a Centre of Knowledge and a hub of commerce. The Emirates Council continues to uphold these legacies, balancing tradition with the demands of modern governance.

Today, under the leadership of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV, the Emirate continues to inspire generations with its commitment to cultural values, harmony, and progress.
