1904-1905

Hamza Musa Maigari was the first to introduced succession in the Maigariship in 1904. He succeeded his father ,Musa Maigari in 1904.

According to reliable information,Hamza planed the deposition of his predecessor, Bukar Abiga for the second time, he was said to have posed the greatest threat to Sarki Bukar because” he saw him as a usurper of the throne which Hamza thought was his birth right”. The significance of his succession lies in the fact that a precedent was set for the hereditary system of succession as mentioned earlier.

Maigari Hamza has been described as “the first Maigari who tried to act as such” and that was the source of his problem and the cause of his downfall. Things were made more difficult for Maigari Hamza when the Town Council was established in 1904, same year he took over the mantle of leadership from maigari bukar abiga . The town council which consists of representatives of major tribes, Islamic clerics, Imams,Ward Heads and chiefs were to serve as the newly constituted Town Council which serve as decisions making body of Lokoja.

The formation of town council as a decision making body curtailed the power of Maigari Hamza which constituted big wigs from the community.

In his efforts to asserting his power as Maigari of Lokoja, Maigari Hamza was said to have entangled in a logger he with some influential members of Lokoja town council as a result of was deposed in 1905.
